Significant facts
The European Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications established for the first time the need for an harmonized European card for the health professionals in Europe.
A working group, gathering members from the five health profession designated by the directive (doctors, pharmacists, midwives, nurses and dental surgeons), was created in 2007. This group is composed by members from the various member states of Europe. An agreement was reached on the graphical aspect of the European side of the professional card. This was officially presented to the European parliament on October the 17th, 2008 in presence in particular of Bernadette Vergnaud and Evelyne Gebhardt, two MEPs.
